The first two albums I ever OWNED on my own- on CD, not to share with my brother, not something of my parents, were RHCP "What Hits," and REM "Out of Time," and the more I think about it, the more I realize I listened to them SO much they've each made an indelible impression on my musical style.
Anyway I think RHCP are one of the better bands of my youth. Funk was more or less DEAD in the water when they came around, and somehow they created enough underground buzz to be HUGE parts of the LA scene for a decade before any serious commercial success THEN they released the biggest album of their career and have been more or less on top since then. No one can touch them when it comes right down to it. They're not Coldplay sure, but their albums and tours sell like hotcakes, and they write some great songs.
Anyway I think John Frusciante is incredible. He's a HUGE influence on me, and he just gets better and better. "Stadium Arcadium" is NOT my fav RHCP album, but I have to hand it to them, they let him step up and spread his wings on this one- it's a guitar tour de force when you get down to it.
Anyway what do you think of them? Favorite songs/albums, or LEAST favorites? Who's seen them live? I have 5 times.

I need to see them live, but I really enjoy their music. I think it's awesome that John was able to join his favorite band at the age of 18. I don't like much of their older stuff, I can't get into Dave Navarro and the early Frusciante stuff is just to funkish for me.

I don't think Frusciante is a very good player, but they're ok. I get bored with them easily, because a lot of the songs sound the same, and singer's voice is unvarying.
