My bass player is ridiculously funky. But now and then on a set-break or whatever I like to pick up his bass and rock out. It's pretty easy to play it adequately. In fact I'd say for just simply playing a song bass is easier than guitar. BUT truly great bass work is MUCH more valuable than great guitar work IMO.
I can play Pink Floyd's "Money" and bass line to "Superstitious," that's good enough for me.

Yeah I like playing bass. I'm thinking about picking up one and an amp from the flea market or something, just for recording and because it's fun to play.

Adding to my post above, I think guitar is better for me than bass, simply because holding a rhythm gets boring to me (unless it's drums). But bass is fun if you need a quick break from tearing up the fretboard, and just want to play some rhythm for once.

Of course you don't, you suck at guitar, so you'd rather embarass yourself on the less audible instrument.

I have a line in plug, and it sounds like shit. Not even close to decent recording quality. I don't want the frequency straight from my amp I want the sound coming out of my amp.
I am a perfectionist, and I will not record a full piece unless I can get a sound I like.

Not making excuses, just telling you how it is.
If he wants to have a battle with short runs, I'm down, but the quality is going to suck ass, and I'm not playing over a backing, because the quality won't be the same.
