This thing has made my sound much better...fuller, more pinch harms when I want...more realistic as well.

Got rid of a "bargain" Voodu Valve...and a Pre-sonus pre-amp...

But my soundcard, as the jack crackles even when inserting the plug itself at times...makes so much noise it would crash the gate at any party.

Hey...we work with what we have...and make the best of it...3+ years old 16-bit, ("24-bit" ahem Crap Labs)

(In case anyone suggests, I tried the entry level EMU and that other brand card...can't remember the name...and those have their own problems.
Like making me spend all day trying to get the thing to work instead of playing...that's a problem.)

So...I still am using the V-Amp's gate, and the settings I need to get the sound I want...
though I turned them way way down.

In fact, eek...tone is so naked...sounding more guitar like...less...Star Wars or whatever...no swishing chorus...still a bit of delay trail...but I can kill that in Goldwave...or some simple panning.

Rough mix here of one of the final outro tracks, thing gets a bit looser each time the melody is played.

Thats what I need...a built in noise gate. This is why I sold my Tubescreamer way back...made more noise than a baptist preacher at a strip club! Can you imagine how many more units they'd sell with some simple noise cancellation circuitry!

Hey...my great...great grandfather was a baptist preacher...and I've been to a few strip clubs...though mostly do the smart thing....

Go to a flybar, spend little to money. and get laid rather than spend tons, like I've seen guys do, and...basically get a live handjob with themselves...

The dancer's are usually prettier than the freebees...but if you are gonna want gorgeous and no ass, might as well get a porn tape...

The Cali has a gate, and though I haven't been able to gauge mine's exact threshold and overall effectiveness, the thing gives
you great sustain...good overtone harmonic color when you want it.

I record direct in...so with a real set-up...like a mic and amp..but then I need alot of shit..

Getting off-topic here but a buddy of mine says he has a great hard mod for the Boss CS-3...increases the sustain but no noise.

Of course I sold my CS-3 months ago but might pick up another.

I have yet to be impressed by a BOSS piece of gear....

Most of their reputation comes from their ruggedness and with the use of other live gear...least that's been my experience and perception...

The Tubescreamer...I have a TTS...a rare pedal, (the occasional benefit of living in the sticks) that just quit working over the course of about 3 days. It's old of course.

This Cali pedal is a bit more tone and feature wise than either of the above.

Well, back to finsihing up this collab...the Steelers game...and then Monday.

I was in a store the other day flipping through guitar magazines and came across an interview where David Gilmour says hes giving up using his time honoured custom pedal board, and is now using a Boss *gasp* multi-effects!

I assume this is because of noise and convenience, but damn...what was that you were saying on the other board about how Eddie's tone now sounds like every other Pod?

Just my preferences...your's may vary...

The main thing I don't like about the tone being used by alot of current players...all types of music...is it's first...over-phased...and also over-compressed.

(Over-phased as in phased shifted...)

It sounds clean...but it's over-processed...and doesn't sound like it was played in a real room...

A studio version of any song...should sound like it was played live,
without the crowd noise of course...in a real...space...human sized space.

Just because you use a PC to record with...doesn't mean you make your music sound like a computer is playing it...or was played inside one.

Totally agree. Duane Eddy's producer used to have him play in a grain silo...how's that for REAL reverb?

Some bands dont want a big roomy drum sound cause they dont think its punky enough...sounds to much like Zeppelin or hair metal. To them its a retro tone.
