READ BEOWULF AND THEN READ GRENDEL.
Look up the plotline of Tales of Symphonia, its a game for the GameCube, but the entire plotline is based on norse mythology.

Well, Freya is the name of the Norse goddess of fertility. And for the purest depiction of ancient Norse culture I'd read the sagas preserved in Icelandic literature...the last of the viking societies to fall to christianity. Beowulf is a later epic from anglo-saxon England...problably the earliest english literature, but not strictly Norse. The word 'thing' is actually a Norse word. Along with several dozen other common words...like 'troll'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_saga

Interesting that the word 'Hell' doesnt appear anywhere in the Greek or Hebrew biblical scripture, but is actually the Norse Goddess of the underworld.
The word was simply taken from the existing culture by early Christian translators in Britain and superimposed onto Christian literature.
Tolkien got much of his inspiration from the Norse mythos.

Different point of view, completely different msesage. kinda like... a diffrent i dont know... ..... chapter? You haven't read Grendel, have you? Beowulf is about the hereo's triumpth and righteousness, while Grendel is about the idiocy deeply imbedded in the human psyche, and trying to understand it objectively. It also hits on a lot of deep philosophical issues. Quite different.

I've gotta check Grendel out, I read Beowulf, great book, too damn christiany. There was this random Mythology book I bought a couple of years back... I think it was by something Hamdill. Or something... man... it's been so long... it had a relatively short(but good) part on Norse Mythology. All your awesome Gods, Forseti, Heimdall, that other dude, the giant people, Ragnarok, the eagle thingy from the tap-root tree... all the good stuff.

Valve, I did it in English 12 grade as well, I graduated last year. You're like a year older than me. Wasn't too long ago.
