I can KINDA do sweep-picking. I've been sort of half-heartedly practicing my sweep-picking a little bit lately. I can do it pretty well in the blues scale, which is the only place I can imagine using it (for now) anyway. I can do runs over any 4 strings pretty well- more than that and my fingers get kinda tied up- but it's getting a little easier every day, I'm sure in another week I'll be blues shredding like mad ;D I noticed the lighter I used my picking hand the easier it was. My teacher told me it's generally HARDER to go from the high strings to the low, but I actually found that a lot easier for some reason- I guess I'm weird.
So I started trying cause I have a song with this one run I wrote that was always just a LITTLE too fast for me to get it just right by plucking each note out- so just on a whim I tried sweep-picking it, and after like 3 or 4 tries I could pretty much nail it every time- so I started trying longer runs and I'm getting better. The only trouble is I'm finding it kinda hard to make sure my pick, and my fretting hand are moving across the strings at the exact same pace- but I'm getting there. I'm finding it really helpful for throwing in quick little runs in the middle of solos, kinda David Gilmour or Jerry Garcia style. Sounds awesome with an envelope filter.

Good luck...
I have tons of inherent timing and rythym...but shredding...I'd have to work at that...a long time...
Since I don't like Shredding...I respect it...but don't like it...I don't take the time.
Again though...good luck...

Well, I'm just wondering what kind of sweeps you get out of the blues scale, here are some major and minor onse I posted a few days ago..
Depends on how many strings you want to do, but heres are a few common sweeping shapes.

These are a few major and minor shapes. They're all based on A. So the first is A, the second and third are Am, and the last is A again.

Wow...someone goes out of there way to sort of imitate me? Except I don't sulk...I don't think... Brood a bit...like to have a serious conversation now and then...but never sulk. Oh well...hope they enjoy it all...  |
